Torvian is replacing disposable to-go containers with reusable plastic green ones. The initiative is called “Green-To-Go.” It has received mixed feedback from the student body.
The idea was introduced to the Student Government Association by Reggie Esmi, Senior General Manager of Dining Services. The initiative had been in effect before the pandemic but was discontinued in 2020.
Esmi felt that it was time to bring the environmentally friendly approach to handling take-out meals back to the dining hall. It reduces the amount of styrofoam waste at the University.
“This is not technically a new idea,” said SGA President Paige Debias.
Students must make a one-time payment of $5 to receive containers, but they are then given a voucher to get a new one the next time they need one. They can also bring back a container that they were provided and switch it out for a new one.
The students can use cash, flex, credit or debit to pay for the container.
“Though this is just the beginning of the semester, I think this policy has been successful,” said Debias.
Students’ opinions on the reinstitution of Green-to-Go are mixed.
“I care a lot about the environment and I think we’re taking good steps toward being environmentally friendly,” said sophomore Madi Runk. “But it is frustrating that we have to pay for [the containers] and carry them around all day.”
Senior Meghan Roach enthusiastically endorses the new meals-to-go model.
“I think the takeout containers are a great initiative,” said Roach. “They are helping Saint Francis reduce their plastic waste and they help the environment.”
Torvian shared information on Green-to-Go with students through an email during the first week of the semester:
Q: Do we have to clean the container?
A: No. We will wash and sanitize them here at Torvian.
Q: Do I have to pay $5 every time I get a container?
A: No. It’s a one-time charge. Just return the container and swipe for your meal as usual.
Q: Can I bring my own container?
A: No. The PA Department of Health does not allow outside containers to be brought in for food.
Q: I don’t want to carry my container around until I come to Torvian. Can I drop it off somewhere else?
A: Yes. You can drop it off at Padua from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Adamucci’s from 8 a.m. 4 p.m., or at Frankie’s any time. Remember to get a voucher from the cashier for your next container.
