The Shields School of Business now offers students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree in Sports Administration.
The major is a “co-major,” which means that it must be paired with another field of study at the University.
The 36-credit program is a blend of courses in Accounting, Communications, Management, Marketing and several other disciplines.
“One of the strongest attributes of the Sports Administration Program is the practical, hands-on nature of the curriculum,” said Marketing Professor Randy Frye, who wrote the proposal for the major.
“Hands-on practicums are baked into the curriculum, along with an internship in the field.”
All students in the program must complete a three-credit internship as part of the major requirements.
“The number one thing employers look for is people who have hands-on experience,” said Kelly Rhodes, chair of the Communications, Criminal Justice and Sports Administration Department.
Students in the program will be visiting Pittsburgh on Nov. 3. The group will receive a tour of Acrisure Stadium and the Steelers and Pitt football team’s training facilities. Students will also participate in an information session with staffers from both the Steelers and Pitt during the visit.
“The sports industry revolves around getting practical experience, establishing professional relationships, and making connections throughout the industry,” said Frye.
