The Student Government Organization (SGA) and the University’s administration recently collaborated on an initiative to provide students with 24-hour access to eight different buildings on campus.
The list of buildings now open 24-7 includes: DiSepio, JFK, Padua, Saint Margaret, Schwab, Science Center, Scotus and Sullivan.
According to University officials, the decision was made to extend these buildings’ hours of access to improve the SFU student experience and to provide students with the resources, space and flexibility they need to succeed academically.
Round-the-clock access to these buildings became available on Oct. 9.
The extended access also helps students if they have a busy schedule and are involved in extracurricular activities.
“The 24-hour access to the buildings has helped me tremendously. Being a commuter, an athlete, and involved in Greek life, sometimes doing homework goes into late nights,” said junior Marketing major Marlie Krug.
“Being able to have a place all night, without distractions, has really benefited my academics.”
University officials noted that maintaining campus safety and well-being is their top priority.
“It is my duty to collaborate with various organizations on campus to enhance public safety,” said SFU Police Chief Brian Ianuzzi.
“Internally, we implemented several minor reporting changes and updated forms for our officers to accurately document the safety checks of all buildings.”
Ianuzzi said that the campus police are regularly patrolling the spaces during the evenings/early mornings.
