University officially introduced the Red Wolves as the school’s new mascot and athletics nickname during a press conference at the Stokes Center on June 3.
Saint Francis will begin competing at the Division III level during the 2026-27 academic year. The 2025-26 academic year was the school’s final year of competition in Division I.
SFU Director of Athletics Jim Brazill opened the ceremony by reflecting on the importance of the moment for the University and its athletics history.
“Today is not about leaving behind the proud tradition that generations built here,” Brazill said. “It’s about honoring that legacy while building momentum for the future.”
Following an opening video presentation, University President Father Malachi Van Tassell, T.O.R., explained the meaning behind the new Red Wolves identity.
It draws inspiration from a story associated with Saint Francis of Assisi and his encounter with the wolf of Gubbio, Italy.
The town of Gubbio lived in fear of a wolf until Saint Francis approached the animal. Through trust and reconciliation, a divided community was brought together and went on to live in peace.
“That story reflects the very values we hope define this University: courage, community, compassion and belonging,” said SFU’s president. “This is not simply a new mascot. It is a symbol of who we are.”
Saint Francis will join the Division III Presidents’ Athletic Conference in 2026-27.
“The Red Wolves will lead the PAC – not chase the PAC,” said Brazill.
PAC Commissioner Joe Onderko was in Loretto for the announcement.
Speakers at the event included Brazill, Father Malachi, Saint Francis men’s basketball coach Luke McConnell and 1989 SFU graduate Randy Wilson.
The logo was designed by area artist Brian Dumm, a Fine Arts teacher at Central Cambria School District in Ebensburg.
In tribute to the former Red Flash logo, a red lightning bolt is prominently displayed in the new logo of the wolf’s coat.
The wolf mascot will be named Gubbio. A mascot costume is currently being designed.
Father Malachi noted that all of the Athletics rebranding will not take place at once and that it will be a gradual transition.
