SFU celebrated its Reaching Every Door (RED) Day on Oct. 1. Various University clubs, sports teams and campus organizations participated in the annual day of service across Cambria and Blair counties.
More than 400 faculty, staff and students volunteered their time to assist in various projects. Activities included clean-up, painting projects and assisting the elderly.
“Working together as a group helps influence others to do the same,” said sophomore Sarah Kibler.
Classes were shortened into a compressed schedule to provide students time to participate in the various community-outreach projects. While the weather was dreary and rainy last Tuesday, it did not diminish the students’ spirit.
“This is my fourth year participating in RED Day with the swim team,” said senior Baily Trettel. “We are thankful for the opportunity to work with Family Services in Altoona.”
The swim team helped the staff at Family Services clean and decorate for Halloween.
Some of the other locations where SFU students lent a helping hand last Tuesday included the Women’s Help Center, the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Food Pantry, the Ebensburg Youth League baseball fields and Vale Wood Farms.
“Being able to give back to the community and not just in a money way, but with something more valuable, was very rewarding,” said senior Bella Schlouch, a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity.
