Spring semester scheduling begins on Monday, Nov. 9. In the Fine Arts Program, students can choose from courses in theatre, visual arts and music, including introductory art classes, music lessons and a special-topics course focused on creating a mural for campus.
The department offers minors in Fine Arts; Fine Arts with a Visual Arts or Theatre emphasis; and Music and Wellness. Students do not need to pursue a minor to enroll in fine arts classes.
“We offer introductory classes in drawing, painting and photography,” said Associate Professor of Fine Arts Lisa Beiswenger.
Students interested in more individualized instruction can explore an independent study in art, which allows them to work one-on-one with professors.
Students considering the Fine Arts minor begin with FNAR 101 – Exploration in the Arts – and FNAR 300 – Culture and Values – before completing nine credits in their chosen concentration.
Those interested in theatre can choose from classes in acting, playwriting, film and theatre. Visual arts students can pursue drawing, painting, photography and special-topics courses.
Students interested in music can consider the Music and Wellness minor, which explores the relationship between music, mindfulness and well-being.
Students without any prior experience can also register for music lessons.
“Our lessons are open to anyone, regardless of skill level,” Beiswenger said.
Available opportunities include voice and instrumental instruction. Other opportunities include joining the SFU Band, which is led by Jonathan Neff, or the World Drumming Ensemble, which is led by Jim Donovan.
The drumming ensemble brings together students, faculty, staff and local community members to learn traditional drumming music from around the world. The groups then perform interactive concerts.
Beiswenger encourages students to consider fine arts classes even if their degree requirements or schedules do not allow them to complete a Fine Arts minor.
