Several English Department students and faculty attended the Rachel Carson Conference at Chatham University on Oct. 17.
Three SFU students presented their research at the conference: Alexis Stoppe, Alyssa Noel and Nate Schritchfield.
“I focused on how connections can be made between Edgar Allen Poe and modern-day aesthetics of alternative subcultures, music, art and trends,” said Noel.
Rachel Carson was an advocate for environmental issues. She used her writing to persuade others to care for the earth. This year’s conference theme was “Water Your Roots.”
“Getting to hear how all the students interpreted the theme and used it in a personal way was exciting,” said Stoppe.
Scritchfield’s presentation was on the history and traditions of tattoo culture in the United States.
During the conference, students were given the opportunity to answer questions about their pieces and explain their personal connection.
“It always makes me excited when I get to talk about something that interests me and then find out that it interests someone else, too,” said Stoppe.
