Sophomore outfielder Morgan Pasternak has become a key contributor for the softball team this season, bringing both power to the plate and energy to the field.
A native of DuBois, the left-hander leads the team with 34 RBI and nine doubles; ranks second on the squad in hits (37), home runs (9) and total bases (72); and currently places third for SFU in batting average (.316) and runs scored (23).
Her presence in the middle of the lineup has provided a consistent offensive spark, while her strong play in centerfield has anchored the Red Flash defense.
“I started playing teeball when I was 5 years old,” Pasternak said. “I grew up around the game – my older brother was always playing baseball.
“Softball and baseball have always been part of my life.”
Pasternak credits her father with helping her develop into the player she is today.
“My dad was always my hitting coach, but didn’t actually coach me until I was about 12,” said the Nursing major. “He’s always known my swing best and knows how to help me correct my mechanics.
“Softball has always been our thing – it’s created a really special bond between us.”
While SFU has struggled this season to post wins, Pasternak remains focused on contributing to the program’s success.
“I’m just helping the team in whatever way I can,” she said. “I try to consistently put in extra work to hopefully see the results.
“I want to help the team to the best of my abilities.”
Pasternak belted a double, scored two runs, and drove in another in her team’s last win, a 7-6 victory over Stonehill on April 11.
Her teammates – especially her fellow outfielders – describe her as a dynamic and energetic player who brings positivity and leadership to the field.
“I play my best when I’m talkative and not in my head,” said Pasternak. “I’ve tried to keep things fun and encouraging.
“Hopefully that rubs off on other people.”
Head coach Bill Vasko has seen the growth in Pasternak from the fall season to this spring.
“Morgan has really elevated her game this year, especially from a power standpoint,” Vasko said. “She’s done a great job driving in runs and has become a consistent presence in the middle of our lineup.
“Defensively, she’s taken ownership of centerfield. She’s continued to improve every day.”
Looking ahead, Pasternak is focused on consistency and continued growth, both individually and as a team. “For myself, I want to be a consistent, reliable teammate that people can count on.
“As for the team, I want us to continue to work and make the little adjustments we need to improve our game.”
The Red Flash travel to FDU for three games this weekend (two on Saturday and one on Sunday). All three games will be streamed on NEC FrontRow.
