Members of the women’s outdoor track and field team received their 2023 NEC championship rings on Oct. 12 prior to the football game against Wagner. Last spring marked the third consecutive year that the team has won the outdoor conference title.
The championship was held at Merrimack last May. On the final day of competition, SFU scored 105 points, surpassing Central Connecticut. SFU finished the championship meet with 147 points.
“Winning conferences for my second year in a row – and it also being the team’s third – was a great feeling,” said junior Josi Wehner, who placed second in the javelin at the NEC finals.
“We were not predicted to win conferences and that made coming out on top that much better.
“Our team was able to step up and perform at our best,” said the Physician Assistant major. “I am extremely proud to be associated with such a great group of girls.”
Senior Marezy Anderson enjoyed the ring ceremony and is looking forward to competing in the upcoming season.
“Coming together and commemorating such an accomplishment really brings the team together and makes us eager for what this coming year will bring,” said Anderson.
“As a member of the 4x800m team last season – and making a contribution to the final score to give our team an edge – means our hard work paid off.”
Madeline Murphy was awarded Most Valuable Performer and Most Outstanding Field Performer honors for her 20-point contribution to the Red Flash’s team total at last spring’s finals. Murphy broke the conference record in the triple jump and earned gold medals in both the long and triple jumps.
Other SFU gold medal finishers at the last year’s championship included Gabby Stanavich (400h), Caroline Ratchford (high jump) and Olivia Conrad (javelin).
Other top finishers included Rhoda Alaban-Tafon (third: 400m), Stanavich (second: 100h), Tierney Beebout (third: high jump), Vittoria Larosa (third: pole vault), Carly Sedun (second: hammer), Wehner (third: javelin) and the 4×800 team of Anderson, Emma Fleck, Tess Helms and Monica Gregg, who finished runner-up in this event
