Sophomore field hockey player Sophia Marciano (pictured above) became just the 10th player in NCAA Division I history to score at least six goals in a game when she scored on six of her 10 shots in SFU’s 7-0 shutout win at Merrimack on Sept. 28.
The NCAA record for goals in a game is seven and is held by former Ball State standout Sally Northcroft, who established this mark in 1999. Marciano becomes the first player to score six goals in a game at the Division I level in nine years.
Before her school-record performance last Sunday, the last DI player with six goals in a match was UConn’s Charlotte Veitner (six vs. Virginia on Sept. 18, 2016).
Marciano had scored just two goals on the season before her six-goal explosion against the Warriors. The midfielder from Buenos Aires, Argentina, scored four of her six goals in the fourth quarter at Merrimack. Senior Emilee Myers had SFU’s opening goal in the Northeast Conference road victory.
SFU (7-3, 3-0 NEC) has won its last four matches entering this Friday’s NEC home contest against Wagner. Over the last three matches, head coach Mackenzie Allessie’s team has outscored its opponents, 10-0.
Following Friday’s match against the Seahawks – which begins at 3 p.m. on DeGol Field – the Flash will hit the road for three straight games at Lock Haven (Oct. 5), Rider (Oct. 10) and Towson (Oct. 12).
