Longtime Boston Globe sportswriter Bob Ryan discussed the craft of writing and shared stories from his long and decorated career with students in Professor of Communications Pat Farabaugh’s Desktop Publishing course on Feb. 6.
Ryan earned the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association’s Sportswriter-of-the-Year Award four times and is a member of the College Basketball Writers and New England Basketball Halls of Fame.
He is the author of 14 books and is one of the original hosts of ESPN’s “The Sports Reporters” program. He is also one of the original cast members of ESPN’s “Around the Horn” and still appears on the show.
Ryan discussed deadline writing, the importance of developing “an aptitude for words,” and the importance of understanding the role that history plays in journalism with SFU’s COMM students.
The Trenton, New Jersey native also participated in the University’s celebration of the career of Red Flash basketball great Kevin Porter during his trip to Loretto.
Ryan covered the Boston Celtics as the Globe’s beat writer during Porter’s professional career and he shared stories about the 1972 SFU graduate’s time in the NBA with alumni and fans.
