SFU’s Literary Club held a “book picnic” on Sept. 4 at its first event of the academic year.
Members talked about their favorite books at the event and voted on the club’s first read of the year.
“Here at SFU, the humanities are slowly dying out, which breaks my heart,” said senior Colette Costlow, the club’s president. “It is my goal to keep it alive through our efforts with the Literary Club.”
Costlow has served as the club’s president for three years.
The first book on the club members’ list for 2024-25 is “The Last Letter” by Rebecca Yarros. The group will analyze and discuss the books they choose during their meetings, which are held bi-weekly.
The group also holds general meetings during which they discuss books that were not chosen for this year’s reading list, but are still ones that members enjoyed reading.
“Being part of the Literary Club gives me the opportunity to share my great love of books,” said Professor of English Brennan Thomas, who serves as the club’s faculty advisor.
“It creates a sense of community,” added Costlow. “It’s really wonderful to see how one book can bring so many people together.
“We usually get a wide range of students from different majors: PA, medical, business, education, humanities, etc.”
The club also plans to host several poetry nights and conduct writing workshops in 2024-25.
“At the end of each semester, our club hosts a book drive, and we donate the books to St. Vincent De Paul in Cresson,” said Costlow.
The club’s Instagram page is @sfuliteraryclub. Members post updates about the club and dates for all activities on this page. The group’s next event is a Slam Poetry Night scheduled for Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. in the Resinski Black Box Theatre.
Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend.
