Football Spring Game Scheduled for Saturday

Members of the football team will compete against one another in the annual Spring Game this Saturday at 4 p.m. at DeGol Field. The game will wrap up the squad’s spring practice drills.

The program won its second NEC championship in school history last fall, posting a 9-3 overall record and a perfect 7-0 mark in the league.

SFU outscored its seven NEC opponents, 287-91, in 2022. The team averaged 41 points in conference games.

“We have a lot of new faces, so we are growing together right now,” said junior linebacker Will Middleton, “but we definitely are going to be physical and mentally tough.”

SFU’s offense – led by the team’s returning quarterback and last year’s NEC Offensive Player-of-the-Year Cole Doyle – ranked 13th in FCS, averaging 35.9 points through 12 games. In total offense, head coach Chris Villarrial’s team ranked 24th among FCS schools (428.8 yards per game).

The Flash defense was also among the best in the nation. SFU ranked 18th in FCS in total defense after allowing opponents just 333 yards per game.

“Winning the NEC championship last season gave us a huge confidence boost,” said redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jason Stone.

SFU will open the 2023 season on Aug. 31 at Western Michigan.
