As the Athletics Program makes its transition from Division I to Division III, the ride has not been an easy one for several Red Wolves fall sports teams.
That includes the football program, which enters this week’s game at Washington and Jefferson with an 0-6 record.
Despite the record, however, the young team has made strides through six games. One of the reasons for this improvement has been the leadership of fifth-year senior tight end Scott Raymond.
The Clarence, New York native has made 16 catches for 196 yards this season. His blocking has also helped SFU’s young running back group find some success.
Raymond’s leadership, however, goes far beyond the stat sheet.
“We had a lot of people transfer out and new players come in,” he said. “Being one of the older guys, I knew I had to step into a leadership role and spread my knowledge of the game to the players coming in.”
SFU’s 2026 roster includes 32 freshmen.
“We knew right away that he was going to be a big part of our offense in the run and pass,” said offensive line coach Aidan Thomas. “He has great hands and great route-running skills that match up well with linebackers and nickels.”
Raymond had a breakout game against Saint Vincent at home on Oct. 17, making a career-high six catches for 102 yards.
Two weeks ago at Westminster, he recorded his first collegiate touchdown on a 36-yard TD reception.
“I have the same mindset for every game and that’s to do my job,” said Raymond.
The veteran tight end has made it a point of emphasis to try and keep his teammates positive through a trying season. He works hard to keep the mood upbeat in practices and games, and he is always helping players out if they need some direction or advice.
“I hope I leave a positive impact on them,” said Raymond. “By sharing some of my experiences with football, I am hoping that they can benefit from it in their careers.”
