With the NFL season hitting its halfway point, the pressure is growing for several head coaches in the league.
Shane Steichen, Jim Harbaugh, Aaron Glenn and Nick Sirianni are among the coaches whose teams have not lived up to their fans’ expectations.
The coach most likely to be fired is Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen. The Colts’ general manager, Chris Ballard, has already been fired, and Steichen is likely to meet a similar fate.
The Colts rank 26th in the NFL in points per game (20.1), while allowing opponents 27.8 points per game.
Indianapolis starting quarterback Daniel Jones has five TDs, nine interceptions and a pitiful passer rating of 68.7.
Then there’s Jim Harbaugh and the 0-7 Chargers. Harbaugh’s reputation as a winning coach gives him a chance of surviving this season, but it seems like Los Angeles is hitting a brick wall and it may be time for change there.
The Chargers’ offensive production has been their biggest problem. The team ranks last in the NFL, averaging just 14.1 points per game.
Herbert’s five touchdown passes – compared to 10 interceptions – through seven games further illustrates the team’s struggles.
What could keep Harbaugh around is the fact that his team had two straight playoff appearances and back-to-back 11-6 seasons.
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn is also on the hot seat entering the second half of the season. The Jets are currently 2-6 despite some very winnable games on their schedule.
Glenn has had problems with game management, situational football and getting the most out of the talent that the franchise has acquired in recent drafts.
For the Jets, it is usually a quarterback problem, but not this year. Quarterback Geno Smith has 12 TDs compared to just three interceptions. He led the league in interceptions last year.
Finally, there is Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni. I think his chances of being fired are lower than the other coaches mentioned in this article due to injuries to running back Saquon Barkley, wide receiver Davonta Smith and quarterback Jalen Hurts.
But with an offense that ranks 30th in the league, Sirianni needs to turn things around soon in the City of Brotherly Love. The Eagles have lost six in a row after winning two straight to open the season.
