The History Club and Omega Zeta Nu Sorority co-hosted an event titled “Celebrating America 250 with Women’s History” on March 18.
The event celebrated the achievements of women throughout history. It was hosted by History Professor Denise Damico, who serves as an advisor for Omega Zeta Nu.
“Women’s history should be mainstream,” said Alyssa Noel, a member of Omega Zeta Nu.
“These brave women used their voices, integrity and education to prove themselves within societies that belittled them.”
Noel said that she appreciates the “accepting, loving and family-like atmosphere” within the Omega Zeta Nu sorority.
Stephanie Hargittai is also a member of Omega Zeta Nu.
“Women representation is so important,” said Hargittai. “Our event talked about some of the amazing women that most of society doesn’t know but should.”
Some of the women who were discussed at the event were Dorothy Day, Elizabeth Willing Powel, Nellie Bly and Madame C.J. Walker.
Also discussed at last month’s event was Patricia Burly, the first female student to enroll at Saint Francis.
“These women are strong and smart,” said Hargittai, “They had to fight for every inch.”
