The field hockey and women’s volleyball teams both enter this weekend’s action undefeated in Northeast Conference competition. The Red Flash field hockey squad is 7-0 in the NEC and has won 10 straight matches. The women’s volleyball team is also 7-0 in conference play and has won eight consecutive matches.
On offense, the field hockey team has been led by Sofia Marciano. The sophomore midfielder from Argentina leads her team and the NEC with 16 goals. Earlier this season, Marciano became the 10th player in NCAA Division I history to score at least six goals in a game when she scored on six of 10 shots in SFU’s 7-0 win at Merrimack on Sept. 28.
The NCAA record for goals in a game is seven and is held by former Ball State player Sally Northcroft, who established this mark in 1999. Marciano becomes the first player to score six goals in a game at the Division I level in the last nine years.
On the defensive end, field hockey goalkeeper Mia DiGenova has been equally dominant. The junior from King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, leads the NEC in goals-against-average (1.25) and save percentage (.765). Earlier this week, DiGenova claimed her third NEC Defensive Player-of-the-Week Award.
On the volleyball court, senior outside hitter Korrin Burns has won the NEC Player-of-the-Week Award five times entering this weekend’s action. She leads the Flash and the Northeast Conference – and ranks second in the nation – in kills-per-set at 5.26.
The Clarion, Pennsylvania, native also tops the NEC in points at 391.5. That mark currently ranks eighth in NCAA Division I.
Both teams compete on the road this weekend. Head coach Mackenzie Allessie’s field hockey team plays at New Haven on Friday at noon.
Head coach Sara Spielvogel’s Red Flash volleyball squad travels to FDU for a pair of matches against the Knights on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.).
All three matches will be streamed on NEC FrontRow.
