The bowling team will compete at the 2024 NEC Championship this weekend (March 22-24) in Hamilton, New Jersey.
SFU’s opponent in the play-in round on Friday at 9 a.m. will be No. 16 Merrimack, which enters the postseason as the fourth seed. The Red Flash secured the fifth and final seed after competing against NEC competition in three regular-season tournaments.
The winner of the SFU-Merrimack match will clinch the last spot in the double-elimination round and earn the opportunity to face off against NEC regular-season champion Duquesne.
The field for the conference postseason also includes No. 2 Sacred Heart and No. 3 Fairleigh Dickinson. The winner of this weekend’s NEC Championship earns the automatic qualifier for the NCAA Regional Tournament next month.
The Flash posted 11 conference wins this season, the most for the team since 2019. Throughout the season, head coach Ashley Bingham’s team showcased its talent by defeating several nationally ranked opponents.
Several noteworthy victories during the regular season came over No. 3 Nebraska (Oct. 14), No. 4 Vanderbilt (Nov. 17) and No. 11 Duquesne (Nov. 11).
The team’s best showing of the season came at the Mount St. Mary’s Shootout, Feb. 9-11. At this event, SFU posted victories over No. 4 North Carolina A&T and No. 13 Mount St. Mary’s en route to a sixth-place finish.
“Our priority is preparing for NECs,” said senior Kassidy Landwehr. “We’re eager to face Merrimack and showcase our skills in the postseason.”
Freshman Ayanna Carrol, who has performed well throughout her rookie season, believes her team is ready for this weekend’s league finals.
“We’ve had a solid season, with some notable wins against tough opponents,” said the Waldorf, Maryland native. “Now, our focus is on seizing the opportunity in front of us at the conference championship.”
The Flash’s match against Merrimack on Friday will be streamed live on NEC FrontRow.
