Field Hockey Team Heads to Rhode Island for Pair of Matches
The field hockey team will travel to Rhode Island this weekend for matches against Brown (Sept. 2) and Holy Cross (Sept. 4).
SFU opened its season in Ohio last weekend, dropping a pair of decisions to Ball State (2-1) and Miami-Ohio (4-0).
“Obviously, our outcomes were not the way we wanted it to be,” said senior defender Caileen Quinn. “However, we made some great improvements as a unit and know what we need to work on to succeed in our future competitions.”
Against Ball State, sophomore Eva Valentini scored her team’s goal off Julia Breneman and Quinn assists in the match’s 25th minute.
Against Miami-Ohio, Valentini recorded a team-high three shots on goal, but the Flash were unable to find the net against the RedHawks in the loss.
Quinn believes her team will build on the lessons it learned in its first action of 2022.
“Something our team trains is the two-minute rule, meaning, any two-minute success,” said Quinn. “For example, an outcome in the first two minutes or last two minutes of a quarter or a two-minute success after a goal, for or against.
“Against Ball State, we were able to bounce back from their first goal with a two-minute goal.”
This weekend it is another long road trip for the team to Rhode Island. SFU will then host Georgetown on Sept. 11 at noon in its home-opener.
“It is very important for our team to respond well this week in training to prepare for our games against Brown and Holy Cross,” said Quinn. “Both teams are very strong and fast.”
