Three students from the Shields School of Business have advanced to the final round of the America250PA Direct Effect Innovation Challenge, after their victory at the regional level on Oct. 23.

The team will compete virtually against other students from across Pennsylvania on Nov. 18.

The Direct Effect Innovation Challenge was established in conjunction with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The Challenge gives student the opportunity to compete against other teams statewide in designing solutions to various business challenges, which they organize and present in a consumer integrated marketing campaign.

SFU’s winning team – Hunter Longenecker, Urska Medvesek and Yanessa Shabbick – is a group of students enrolled in a Marketing Research course taught by Assistant Professor of Marketing Tricia McFadden.

“We were in Marketing Research with Dr. McFadden and she introduced us to the idea and then organized us into teams,” said Medvesek, a senior Digital Media and Strategic Communications major from Slovenia. “We were competing for the challenge against each other in that class.”

After winning the classroom round, the next stop was a regional competition in the Innovation Challenge. The group was victorious at the regional level, punching their ticket to the state finals on Nov. 18.

“I’m very excited,” said Medvesek.
