Show times are set for the Fine Arts Program’s performances of “The Importance of Being Earnest.”
The shows are scheduled for April 18 and 19 at 7 p.m.; April 20 at 2 and 7 p.m.; and April 21 at 2 p.m. All shows are in JFK Auditorium.
Written by Oscar Wilde in 1895, “The Importance of Being Earnest” follows two young men who take fictious names in pursuit of marriage in British high society.
“The show is about how those in power can deploy language to maintain ‘earnestness,’ even when they mean the opposite,” said Assistant Professor of Theatre Lance Mekeel, the show’s director.
“My inspiration for this show is the 19th-century British upper class and their desire for consumption,” said Mekeel. “They consume whatever they want.”
Senior Olivia Theisen, who plays Miss Prism in the show, said she enjoys Wilde’s plays.
“Wilde picks words that are very funny and appropriate for this time period,” said Theisen. “It’s one of those plays that everyone should watch at least once in their lives.”
General admission tickets for next week’s shows are $5 for students and $10 for adults.
