The men’s soccer team continues to search for its first victory of the 2026 season, but the team’s players believe the program is making progress despite its struggles on the field.
The Red Wolves fell to Waynesburg, 5-0, on Oct. 14, dropping their record to 0-11. Despite the loss, players remain focused on developing team chemistry, establishing a playing identity, and building a foundation for future seasons.
Freshman left back Lorenzo Plaza said the season has been disappointing in terms of results, but notes that the team has made significant progress in other areas.
“Although we have ultimately failed to produce results, we still established a good team culture and have improved individually and as a team throughout the season,” Plaza said.
Against Waynesburg, the Red Wolves surrendered four goals in the first half before holding the Yellow Jackets to one goal in the second. Goalkeeper Brian Hegerty recorded nine saves, while Álvaro Planas led SFU with three shots.
Plaza said establishing a consistent style of play has been one of its biggest accomplishments this fall.
“Team culture and building our football identity is definitely the highlight of the year,” Plaza said.
Plaza also credited the team’s young coaching staff and team-building activities with helping players maintain a positive attitude despite the struggles.
“Having such young coaches helps them be very relatable and easy to talk to, which in turn helps keep positive attitudes, since it is easy to speak our minds freely and openly,” Plaza said.
The Red Wolves will host Thiel this Saturday at 1 p.m. before closing the season on the road against Franciscan on Oct. 28.
Plaza remains confident in the program’s future.
“We have the right coaching staff and core personnel to establish a respectable program in college soccer down the line,” Plaza said.
