The women’s soccer team lost 2-1 at Allegheny on Sept. 26.
The Red Wolves fell behind early after Allegheny’s Delaney David scored in the seventh minute of the match.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of the Gators until the 53rd minute when SFU freshman Molly Baker netted the equalizer. Her goal was assisted by Caterina Schiavo and Mercedez Paino.
Allegheny, however, reclaimed a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute of the match and held off SFU over the final 12 minutes to post the victory.
Baker, who is tied for the team lead with four goals on the season, said scoring against Allegheny was exciting.
“It was good to score against a team where I knew some of the other girls,” said the first-year forward from Wexford, Pennsylvania.
In SFU’s home match on Sept. 19, Baker scored five points on two goals and an assist in a 4-0 victory over Chatham.
“I’m proud that we are all able to push ourselves for 90 minutes as a team and not give up,” said Baker. “I want the team to keep our heads held high and focus on the next game.”
Panio, a senior from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, was proud of her team for battling for 90 minutes against the Gators.
“Being a captain, the team follows your emotions, so it was super important for me to stay positive and encouraging throughout the entire game,” said the senior midfielder.
“When we went down 2-1, I made sure I was saying that we still had plenty of time left to get back in the game.”
SFU (3-4-1) lost despite holding a 12-10 advantage in shots on goal. Red Wolves goalkeeper Alyssa Walker made seven saves.
Panio thinks the best is yet to come for her team.
“I’m looking forward to seeing us improve after every game, because I truly
believe if we would play that team next week, the result would be different,” Panio said.
The Red Wolves return to action on Friday, traveling to Westminster for a PAC match that begins at 5 p.m.
