SFU’s American Marketing Association team traveled to Chicago to compete in the AMA’s International Collegiate Conference from March 12-14.
The conference included various competitions such as a marketing simulation, design lab, digital marketing challenge, sales challenge and perfect pitch.
More than 1,900 students from around the U.S. and the world attended the event.
The SFU team included Patty Cabrera, Daniel Farrar, Camille Gagnon, Erin Golding, Lucia Johnson, Marlie Krug, Rachel Lucas and Bryar Schilling. Assistant Professor of Marketing Kim Flanders joined the team on the trip.
“The competitions not only gave exposure to future career paths, but also allowed me to test the waters in them,” said AMA Co-President Patty Cabrera.
“Talking with professionals at the conference made me feel more confident about my skills in and out of the classroom, as well as understanding what employers are seeking in candidates.”
The team got to experience Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities last weekend, including the dyeing of the Chicago River green and the city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.
“I think it was a great bonding experience,” said Co-President Bryar Schilling.
This was the first year that students in SFU’s chapter of AMA attended the ICC. The team hopes to make a return trip to Chicago next year.
Team members noted that they felt very prepared for the competitions after numerous practice sessions with the club’s faculty advisor, Dr. Flanders.
“There were a lot of opportunities at the conference and I think, as a group, we did a really good job of making use of all of them,” said Johnson.
