Students packed JFK Lounge for the second night of SFU’s Got Talent on Feb. 13. The event is a talent showcase hosted annually by the Student Activities Organization (SAO).
Last week’s event drew roughly 120 attendees and featured a mix of performances, mini-games and door prizes.
The festivities were hosted by members of the SAO Executive Board: Lexie Reesman, Rylie Ellis and Alec Thiele.
Ellis serves as vice president of SAO and is a freshman majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology. She said that organizing the show has been a learning experience.
“I wouldn’t have been able to do it without Alec and Lexie, especially transferring into the role of vice president,” Ellis said.
“It’s been overwhelming at times, but it’s been going pretty well.”
Ellis, who serves as treasurer of SAO, organized mini-games to keep the audience entertained and secured door prizes to help draw attendees.
SAO President Lexie Reesman is a freshman majoring in Medical Laboratory Science. She said that stepping into a leadership role in planning and coordinating the event was intimidating.
“It was definitely overwhelming at first, never having been to SFU’s Got Talent, let alone ran one, but Ava, Haley and Meghan (DeFrancesco) have been helpful by explaining things.”
Reesman said the project has required teamwork, from organizing shopping lists to coordinating activities.
“Events like this matter on campus because they’re fun and bring something new,” she said.
“I hope students have a great time, are entertained, and are inspired to come to more SAO events.”
Performers brought their all, with acts ranging from taekwondo demonstrations to singing, band performances and dancing.
Gavin Ross, a junior Chemistry major, returned for his third consecutive year.
“My act today is pink and showy,” Ross said. “I love performing in front of others and bringing a smile to people’s faces. It’s definitely a great time, and I’d encourage others to sign up next year.”
The Literary Club sold concessions throughout last Friday’s event.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in the finale, with $500 for first place, $250 for second and $100 for third.
The finale will take place in JFK Lounge this Friday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m.
