Junior Trey Weiand was selected the winner of the 2026 Kevin Grodzki Award earlier this month.
The monetary award is presented annually to a full-time SFU student-athlete who exemplifies leadership and makes a positive impact within the University community.
Weiand has competed on the SFU men’s basketball team each of the last three seasons. He is also an active member of the Shields School of Business.
“Showing up every day, consistently, with a smile on my face and a great attitude has been something I have been working on for many years,” said Weiand.
Kevin Grodzki was a starting guard on the Red Flash football team from 1973-77 and earned a degree in Accounting from SFU.
He enjoyed a highly successful career as a corporate executive for several different companies, including the Dupont, Crompton and Brunswick corporations.
A native of New Brunswick, New Jersey, Grodzki spent more than 20 years with Dupont, serving many of those years as business director of Dupont’s Crosfield Electronics division.
He was also a great friend to SFU, often returning to campus as an Executive in Residence.
As a member of the Red Flash offensive line, Grodzki was a key blocker for SFU Hall-of-Fame running back Jay Roberts, who rushed for almost 4,000 yards in his collegiate career.
Grodzki died in 2021 following a bout with pancreatic cancer.
“Trey checks all the boxes,” said Randy Frye, Dean of the SSOB. “He’s an outstanding student.”
Trey said he models his mom’s approach to living life.
“She has dedicated her life to serving others, not just my brothers and I, but her coworkers, friends and other family members.”
Weiand, a native of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, said he also strives to follow the teachings of Jesus and exemplify Christ’s values, both on and off the court.
The award was established by the Grodzki family and is presented each year to a student studying in the SSOB.
“I hope to continue Mr. Grodzki’s legacy by reciprocating the love and support I have received at this University with the rest of the world,” said Weiand.
