A Turning Point USA chapter has officially launched at the University.
Turning Point USA is a national student organization promoting freedom, free markets and limited government.
The SFU chapter will hold meetings twice a month. Debate frequency and speaker nights will be determined as the chapter grows, including open debates around campus, as well as closed-door debates.
Associate Professor of Theology Brian Besong will serve as the chapter’s faculty advisor. Officer positions in the organization include president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.
A college field representative from Turning Point will assist the chapter’s officers with merchandise orders, speaker requests and other needs.
Following the assassination of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk in Utah in September, new chapters of the organization have been springing up on college campuses across the country.
“I have always liked Charlie Kirk, but never felt the push to start a chapter until he died,” said SFU Turning Point Vice President Lindsay Nyanko.
“It is more important now than ever to not be afraid to speak up about what you believe in.”
The new chapter’s leadership team hopes to create a space for open dialogue.
“We want to bring conservatives together under a common banner to help rebuild our country, and have good conversations with everyone, no matter their political perspective,” said Besong.
The group hopes that the chapter will foster respectful discussions and that it will grow as students learn more about its mission.
“I really hope we can make this the biggest club on campus,” said Treasurer Joey Testa. “I think it’s definitely possible.”
The chapter intends to host debate events that are open to the entire University community.
