SFU hosted “The Examined Life: An Undergraduate Conference in the Liberal Arts” at the Connors Family Fine Arts Center on March 28.
The conference included presentations from students and faculty in disciplines such as Philosophy, Literature, Art and Science. Cash prizes were awarded to the top presenters at the event.
Dean of the School of STEAM Art Remillard helped organize the conference.
“The conference began in 2008 at SFU with a small but passionate group of three students,” said Remillard. “They loved their education and professors, but they were eager to meet others — outside of SFU — who were equally excited about ideas. That spirit of intellectual curiosity and connection has driven it ever since.”
Conference attendees and presenters at this year’s event included students and faculty from Duquesne, Saint Vincent and Buffalo State in addition to those from SFU.
“This conference tends to attract extra-motivated students,” said Remillard. “While we don’t target specific schools, we welcome anyone who is genuinely passionate about the liberal arts.”
“My favorite part of the conference was being able to host students from different universities,” said sophomore English and Secondary Education major Madyn Allison, who presented at last month’s event. “It was nice to meet diverse people with different experiences.”
Remillard said he looks forward to bringing the conference back to Loretto.
“We’ll certainly host again here at SFU,” said Remillard. “It’s a joy to welcome people to our campus.”
