Freshman setter Kyle Charles has wasted no time establishing himself on the Red Flash men’s volleyball team.
The Lititz, Pennsylvania native has claimed the Northeast Conference Rookie-of-the-Week Award seven times in 2025. He currently leads his team in assists (526) and ranks fourth on the squad in digs (64).
He earned his seventh NEC Rookie-of-the-Week Award following standout performances against Queens and Erskine on the road last week. Across the two matches, the 6-6 setter recorded 87 assists (10.9 per set), 23 digs, three blocks, three kills and one ace.
Charles claimed his first NEC Defensive Player-of-the-Week honor last Monday to go along with the league’s weekly rookie award.
“Kyle’s composure and skill have been invaluable,” said his teammate Andrew Deardorff. “His ability to set up plays and keep the team focused has been a game-changer for us.”
The Red Flash (6-12) open NEC action this weekend with matches against D’Youville on Saturday (6 p.m.) and Sunday (4 p.m.). The team has won three of its last four matches.
“Kyle’s transition (from high school to college) has been impressive,” said SFU head coach Mike Rumbaugh. “His work ethic and understanding of the game have elevated our team’s performance.”
Charles was a standout player at Warwick High School. He earned two consecutive Lancaster-Lebanon League MVP titles in 2023 and 2024 and was a four-time all-star in the league.
He was also a three-time Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association first-team all-state selection before enrolling at Saint Francis.
Charles attributes much of his success to his family and the SFU coaching staff.
“My family’s unwavering support and the guidance from my coaches have been instrumental,” said Charles. “I’m excited to continue growing both academically and athletically here at SFU.”
