On a course played by legends Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler, the Red Flash men’s and women’s golf teams hosted their first home tournament since 2015 on Oct. 7-8.
The Flash men placed seventh out of eight teams at the Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown with a score of 601. The SFU women finished fifth out of 10 teams (644).
Sunnehanna has hosted the nationally recognized Sunnehanna Amateur Event since 1954, and the course has been ranked in the top 100 “Classic Golf Courses” since 2003.
SFU freshman Alex Yong led the men’s team, firing a two-round total of 147. He closed the tournament with a final round of 71.
Young’s second-day performance moved him up 16 spots and he tied for 14th place overall out of 51 golfers. The Stockton, New Jersey native finished the tournament with six birdies and 19 pars.
Fletcher Dasso posted a team-best round of 73 on the opening day of the tournament, followed by a 77 in the final round. The freshman finished with five birdies and 16 pars.
Sophomore Hunter Jurica posted a pair of 77s, with a birdie and 21 pars over the two-day event.
On the women’s side, junior Meghan Zambruno shot a 75 in the final round, moving up four spots on the leaderboard. She finished seventh out of 56 golfers with a two-day score of 155.
Junior McKenzie Gustus finished tied for 17th individually with a 161. Her scorecard included three birdies and 17 pars. Senior Anna Crumrine carded four birdies, along with 11 pars in her two rounds, and tied for 31st with a 168.
The next tournament for the SFU men is at Bucknell on Oct. 13-15. The women’s team’s final tournament of the fall season is at Lehigh, Oct. 19-20
