The water polo team traveled to California over Spring Break earlier this month, playing five matches in three days.
The final action of the trip was an exhibition match against the USA Water Polo Youth Team.
Emese Szucs, a senior from Budapest, Hungary, was a dominant force in the pool across all five matches. She was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s Player-of-the-Week last week for her efforts.
Szucs scored 12 goals in four games. Stats were not maintained in the exhibition match against USA Water Polo. Against Redlands, the Communications major netted six goals in a 16-7 victory.
Szucs also recorded two assists and three steals on the trip.
Joining Szucs in the spotlight in California was Isabel Lumley, a junior from Brisbane, Australia.
Lumley earned Honor Roll recognition from the CWPA for her stellar defensive play. The team’s goalie played 56 minutes in net across three games, recording 19 saves and a steal.
SFU’s toughest competition came in a 22-6 loss to No. 5 Southern California. Despite the loss to the Trojans, the team’s resilience and determination were on full display in the match against one of the top teams in the nation.
The Flash posted wins against Whittier (16-6) and La Verne (17-6) on the trip, in addition to the victory against Redlands. Sophomores Caylah Olay and Aubrey Miller played pivotal roles in these two wins. Olay scored three goals against both Whittier and La Verne. Eschelman scored three goals versus La Verne.
In addition to the action in the pool, the team enjoyed some bonding and cultural experiences on the trip. The players and coaches explored several cities of California, visiting iconic landmarks and sampling the region’s cuisine.
SFU returns to action this weekend, competing at the Michigan Invitational. The Flash will play four matches in two days (March 23-24), beginning with a game against Bucknell on Saturday. SFU defeated the Bison, 8-7, earlier this season.
