The softball team improved to 9-1 on the season after posting five wins at the Wofford Invitational last weekend.
The Red Flash closed the weekend with a commanding 4-0 win over host Wofford in the championship game. It was the third straight shutout victory for SFU, which gave up just three runs in five games at the tournament. The Flash outscored its opponents 37-3 over the five games.
In a stellar pitching performance in the tournament’s title game, graduate student Grace Vesco (4-0) allowed just four hits while striking out eight in a complete-game effort. Vesco’s masterful control stifled Wofford’s offense.
Key contributors to SFU’s offense in the 4-0 victory were Savannah Nash, Madelyn Wilson and Olivia Ulam. Nash went one-for-three with a run scored and two RBI. Ulam was one-for-three with two runs scored. Wilson was also one-for-three and drove in two runs.
“We came into this tournament with a lot of determination and focus,” said Nash, a sophomore from Mechanicsville, Virginia.
Wilson, who is batting .429 on the season in five games of action, said the team is showing others what it is capable of this year.
“It feels incredible to come out undefeated and showcase our potential on the field,” said the sophomore from Friendswood, Texas.
“Every game, we come together as a unit and execute our game plan. It’s a testament to our hard work and dedication.”
The Red Flash seized control in the fourth inning against Wofford last Sunday. Nash’s two-run double, coupled with a timely single by Rachel Marsden, propelled SFU to a 2-0 lead. The Flash would tack on two insurance runs in the seventh inning on a two-RBI single by Wilson.
The 9-1 mark to open the 2024 season matches the school’s best start in program history. SFU will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, this weekend, playing five games in three days (Feb. 23-25).
The Flash will open the tournament on Friday with a 10 a.m. game against Penn State. SFU will also play host Liberty (twice), Penn and Morgan State.
