The women’s basketball team dropped a pair of decisions on the road last week, falling to Stonehill (66-57) and Merrimack (71-48).
The team has played five of its last six games on the road but that will change to open the month of February. SFU will play five of its next six games in the friendly confines of the Stokes Center, beginning with a game against Central Connecticut State on Feb. 1.
Fans will want to make sure they get to Loretto during the upcoming homestand to watch freshman standout Kendall Carruthers. The first-year player from Holland, Ohio currently leads the team in scoring (12.6 ppg), three-pointers (34), three-point percentage (31.5) and minutes played (29.3 mpg).
At LIU on Jan. 19, Carruthers poured in a career-high 30 points, sinking eight of her nine three-point shot attempts against the Sharks. She also had four assists and four rebounds. Her 30 points and eight three-pointers were the most by an SFU player since Jess Kovatch scored 38 points and knocked down eight treys on March 11, 2019.
Carruthers then scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds two days later to help her team defeat LeMoyne, 55-52, on Jan. 21. The Red Flash handed the Dolphins their first loss in the league in the three-point victory in Loretto.
Carruthers has been named the Northeast Conference’s Rookie-of-the-Week three times already this season.
“Individual recognitions are great, but my focus is always on helping the team win,” said the Physical Therapy major.
“We had a tough loss against Stonehill, but we’ll learn from it and come back stronger.”
Carruthers currently ranks sixth in the league in scoring at 12.6 ppg and fifth in three-point field goal shooting percentage (31.5).
“Kendall has been a crucial member of our team,” said Red Flash head coach Keila Whittington. “She is incredibly skilled at scoring, setting up plays for her teammates, and playing critical defense.
