The football team’s spring practice schedule ends on Saturday, April 20, with the annual Spring Football Game.
The game begins at 4 p.m. at DeGol Field.
With a little over four months until the Red Flash open the 2024 season at Dayton on Aug. 31, SFU’s returnees are excited to show fans what to expect in the fall.
The Flash finished 4-6 last season (4-3 in the NEC).
The scrimmage provides an opportunity for young players to show what they can do on the field this fall, and that includes redshirt sophomore quarterback Nick Whitfield Jr.
Whitfield is the frontrunner for the starting quarterback job after 2022 NEC Offensive Player-of-the-Year and two-year starting QB Cole Doyle transferred to East Tennessee State.
Whitfield started two games last fall, filling in for Doyle when he was injured late in the season.
Against Merrimack in last year’s Homecoming Game, the Fredonia, New York native threw for two touchdowns and also caught a scoring pass in a win against the Warriors.
Following that game, Whitfield was named the FCS National Freshman-of-the-Week.
Also returning for SFU in 2024 is redshirt receiver Casey McKinney. The Germantown, Maryland native ranked second on last year’s squad in receptions (20) despite playing only four games due to injury. McKinney caught a touchdown pass in three straight games before his injury and will look to pick up where he left off this fall.
SFU will face two FBS opponents in a season for the first time in school history in 2024. The Flash will play at Kent State on Sept. 7 and at Eastern Michigan on Sept. 21.
Head coach Chris Villarrial’s team will host Central Connecticut in its home-opener on Sept. 14.
