Saint Francis is off to its first 0-3 start since 2008, two years before head coach Chris Villarrial took over the program.
The Red Flash will host Sacred Heart in their 2023 home-opener on Saturday, Sept. 23. Kickoff of the game against the Pioneers is at noon and the game will be streamed on NECFrontRow.
The Red Flash dropped a 42-14 decision at Delaware last weekend, but the team put up a valiant effort against the Blue Hens in the first half. After a scoreless first quarter, SFU marched 85 yards on 15 plays, capping the nearly nine-minute drive with a Cole Doyle 4-yard TD pass to Casey McKinney.
Delaware responded, however, scoring three straight touchdowns to build a 21-7 lead at the half. The last Blue Hens scoring drive of the first half included a ball that was thrown 10 yards short of the sticks, only for Delaware to find a way to take it an extra 40 yards on an insane juke and burst by Kym Wimberly, who found the endzone.
“In a two-minute situation, we are taught to go out of bounds there, but I felt like I could make him miss,” Wimberly told reporters after the game.
The second half saw Delaware score three more unanswered touchdowns, including a 56-yard pick six by Dillon Trainer.
The Red Flash fell to 0-3 all time against the Blue Hens.
“They are a physical football team,” Villarrial said.
Delaware running back Marcus Yarns ran for a game-high 139 rushing yards on only 12 carries (11.6 yards per rush).
