Spring semester scheduling begins on Monday, Nov. 9.
Computer Science Assistant Professor Michael Zambotti encourages students to try new things through their elective courses.
“When selecting electives, try to go beyond your comfort zone and pick a class that sounds interesting, but is outside of the previous classes you have taken,” suggested Zambotti.
“College is a great time to challenge yourself and learn about new things. You never know – a class could inspire you in your future career path.”
Some students look at electives as “free” A’s to boost their GPA, but it is important to remember that they can be used to diversify one’s skills.
Resident Assistant and Physical Therapy major Aaron Frey recommends that students take elective courses early in their college career so that they don’t distract from higher-level major classes later. He also recommends considering a minor.
“Plan ahead and figure out what classes you will need to complete the requirements,” Frey said.
Communications and Criminal Justice Department Chair Kelly Rhodes reminds students to take ownership of their academic journey and be open-minded.
“Students should talk to their advisors about any potential career paths they are considering,” said Rhodes. “Explore many areas. One conversation can lead to a new direction.”
