Greek Life is most lively at SFU during the spring semester because this is when freshmen officially join their sororities and fraternities.
This spring’s Bid Day was Feb. 12 and was followed by Airband, which provided an opportunity for the new members to choreograph a dance to show the SFU community.
“My favorite part of Airband was being able to show off all the hard work we put into practicing,” said Izaac Erwin, a new member of Alpha Phi Omega.
New members are currently completing a five-week process of New Member Education and will attend chapter-specific initiation on March 27.
Following these education and initiation activities is Greek Week. It is actually two weeks of friendly competition between the chapters, with many sports and activities.
These include Greek Mass, flag football, soccer, minute-to-win-it games, penny wars, dodgeball, basketball, volleyball, tug-of-war, corn hole, trivia games, Mario Kart games and Greek Sing.
Greek Week begins on March 30 with a soccer tournament between the sororities and a flag football tournament between the fraternities.
The 2024 Greek Week winners were Tau Kappa Epsilon (fraternities) and Theta Phi Alpha (sororities).
Greek Week ends with Greek Sing on April 4. Greek Sing is typically the most anticipated event during Greek Week and often determines the winner. It is also a fan favorite.
“Although Greek Sing is still a competitive event, it feels like we all put that aside and instead just have a really fun night cheering each other on during each performance,” said Madi Runk, a member of Alpha Phi Omega.
“It’s less about winning and more about sharing Greek unity.”
“Being out there with my brothers, pushing each other, and going head-to-head with other organizations makes it one of the best times of the year,” said Colton Long, a brother of Phi Kappa Theta.
“The competitive atmosphere between organizations is exciting,” he said.
Some of this year’s Greek Week events are new or modified from 2024.
One event that has been eliminated is the poster contest. Instead, there will be a T-shirt contest. The winners will have their designs featured on the 2025 Greek Week shirts.
The 2025 Greek Week chairs are Kelly Wolfe, a sister of Theta Phi Alpha, and Evan Haglin, a brother of Phi Kappa Theta.
Another change in 2025 is the introduction of a new award.
“We added a Sportsmanship Award to recognize those who go the extra mile for not only their chapters, but all of Greek Life,” said Wolfe.
