Shields School of Business students visited New York City, Nov. 7-9, for an educational excursion.
The trip included a stop at the New York Stock Exchange, a meal in Little Italy at Da Nico Ristorante, an alumni mixer, a visit to the 9/11 Memorial Museum and a tour of the Brooklyn Bridge.
The group stayed at the Club Quarters Hotel near the World Trade Center.
“My favorite part of the NYC trip was getting to see the city atmosphere of the business world with my classmates and Dr. Frye,” said sophomore Marketing major Patty Cabrera.
The dean of the SSOB, Randy Frye, accompanied the students on the trip.
During the stop at the Stock Exchange, students had the opportunity to walk around on the historic floor. They also heard from Paul Slinkowski, a stock trader at Meridian Equity Partners.
Slinkowski discussed his profession with the SFU group, as well as some of the history of the Stock Exchange. He has been working the NYSE for 41 years.
He starts his day at 3:15 a.m. and ends it around 6:30 p.m. Slinkowski commutes from Eastern Pennsylvania to Lower Manhattan five days a week.
Frye believes it is important to get SFU students out in the field to hear from business leaders and see how the business worlds works.
“Travel is an opportunity to deliver on the brand promise that we make to current and future students,” he said.
Students met up with eight SFU alumni at a mixer at the iconic Rosy O’Grady’s Tavern in Times Square. Alumni talked about their experiences in the business field and at Saint Francis.
“Every time I travel with the SSOB, I’m reminded just how much Dr. Frye truly cares about each of us—not just current students, but alumni as well,” said junior Marketing major Marlie Krug. “That kind of support stays with us.”
In addition to the trip’s educational elements, the students were also able to explore the city on their own.
“I like to show the students the world – and a good time,” said Frye. “It is also a means for new students to meet others and build community, which is sacred to a small school.”
For some of the students on the trip, it was their first time visiting New York City.
My favorite part was being in Times Square with all the screens,” said sophomore Communications major Samantha Przbys, who was making her first visit to NYC.
