Consu de Castro and the Red Flash field hockey team wrapped up the 2024 season last week. SFU finished the season with a 10-8 final record and a 5-3 mark in the NEC, just missing a spot in the conference’s postseason tournament.
It marked the second straight 10-win season for the program.
De Castro led SFU with 11 goals and 24 points. Within the NEC, she ranked second in goals and fifth in points-per-game (1.33).
De Castro, who started all 18 of her team’s games, improved her play from match to match. The forward from Chascomús, Argentina, also topped her team in shots on goal (34) this fall.
The Global Business Management major was playing for a new head coach this season. Mackenzie Allessie assumed head coaching responsibilities of the SFU program last April.
“I came into this year with some uncertainty because we had a new coaching staff and I didn’t know what the team would look like,” said de Castro. “However, throughout the season I felt more confident with my game and the team felt like a family.”
De Castro’s 11 goals scored this fall are the seventh most in a single season in SFU history.
“Consu is a very hardworking and determined player,” said her teammate Brooke Benson. “She is always looking to improve her skills and knowledge while also helping her teammates.
“Next season, I see her continuing to grow as a player and achieving anything she puts her mind to.”
Even though the 2024 season wrapped up less than a week ago, de Castro is already looking ahead to 2025.
“Next season, the main goal is to qualify for the NEC playoffs and fight for the title. I look forward to providing knowledge and experience. I want to be an important part of this team’s success and I can’t wait to show it.”
The Flash closed the 2024 season with two wins in their last three matches, including the program’s first-ever victory over NEC rival Fairfield on Oct. 25. SFU outscored its last three opponents, 8-4.
“I’m very proud of this whole season,” said de Castro.
