Former SFU men’s basketball star Devin Sweetney has returned to his alma mater to join the program as an assistant coach.
“I have always been connected to SFU, even after I left,” said Sweetney, who enjoyed a long professional career since his graduation in 2010.
“(SFU head coach) Rob Krimmel played a crucial role in my development. I’ve known him since my teens and I never cut the link with the program.”
Sweetney played 12 seasons of professional basketball in 17 different countries. He was drafted by the Tulsa 66ers in the NBA’s D-League in 2010 and played in several preseason games with the Denver Nuggets in 2015.
“Having been in the program here, I think I understand what players are going through,” said Sweetney. “Whether it’s managing their schedules or being away from their families, my experience will help them navigate those moments.
“I want them to know that I understand them, not just as a coach but also as a former student-athlete who has been in their position.”
Sweetney graduated from SFU with a bachelor’s degree in Management. He completed requirements for a master’s degree in Education Leadership from the University last year.
The Washington, D.C., native ranks ninth in program history in scoring (1,529 points) and 15th in rebounding (754). He played at SFU from 2006-10 and earned first-team All-NEC honors in 2009-10.
He said the college game has evolved since his playing days in Loretto.
“It’s much faster now. There’s also a stronger emphasis on three-point shooting.”
Sweetney said that he is looking forward to building relationships with the members of SFU’s team.
“I am a coach who is looking to connect with his players,” he said. “I am also there to push them to be the best version of themselves.”
Sweetney served as an assistant coach at his high school alma mater – Riverdale Baptist – last season.
His said his transition from player to coach has been seamless.
“I’ve always been someone who likes to analyze the game, understand the tactics.”
