A second-floor window was shattered in Giles Hall on Sept. 23.
Three female students and two male students were allegedly racing down the hall when one of them ran into the window, shattering the glass.
The students involved received medical attention after suffering injuries during the incident.
“The hall seemed quiet at first, and then we heard a big smash,” said a freshman who lives in a room adjacent to the window. “We didn’t think it was anything until we came out of our room and saw broken glass.
“One of the students had his arm all cut up and another had some injuries.”
The student said many of those living in Giles gathered to witness the aftermath.
“There was chaos, and everyone was coming upstairs to see what the commotion was,” the student said. “Residence Life came first, then the police, and finally some administrators.”
The student said that Residence Life “did not seem happy” about the incident.
Staff instructed students to return to their rooms, but many continued to linger on the second floor following the incident.
On the social media platform YikYak, many students posted pictures and discussed the evening’s excitement.
“Two people were racing down the hallway, and one didn’t stop in time,” said a student on the platform on Monday. “He’s bloody, from what I’ve heard.”
Another student said that while walking past Giles on the evening of the incident, he saw campus police and two EMS vehicles outside the building.
“Did Giles blow up?” a student posted after hearing the noise of the window shattering.
Eventually, cleanup of the hall began and plywood was placed over the window. Bloodstains in a nearby bathroom also required cleanup.
“A local vendor, AmeriGlass, was on campus the day after the incident,” said Dave Williams, Director of SFU’s Physical Plant in an email.
“They will repair the window. The timeframe is uncertain, depending on how quickly they can procure the necessary materials, but they are expediting the process to the best of their ability.”
SFU Residence Life and the students involved in the incident declined to comment for this story.
