Three SFU Football Players Earn Preseason All-NEC Honors
Defensive lineman Donnell Brown, placekicker Alex Schmoke and center Seth Osborne have been selected to the Preseason All-Northeast Conference Team.
Brown recorded 46 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and five sacks last season. The redshirt sophomore was an All-NEC Second Team selection in 2021.
“It’s exciting to be selected,” said Brown. “I plan on putting my best foot forward and helping this team win any way that I can.”
Schmoke led the NEC with 70 points in 2021. The redshirt freshman converted on 15 of his 17 field goal attempts last season and connected on six field goal tries beyond 40 yards.
“Schmoke was on point during camp this year and very locked in on strengthening his legs,” said SFU special teams coach Josh Hutchison.
Schmoke, a First-Team All-NEC performer in 2021, has also focused on the mental aspect of the game since the end of last season.
“All offseason, my goal has been to become mentally strong and to help my team be successful,” he said.
Osborne is excited and ready for his redshirt junior year. One of the team’s captains in 2022, he earned All-NEC Second Team honors a season ago. He was the leader of an SFU offensive line that allowed just 23 sacks in 2021.
“It’s an honor to be selected Preseason All-NEC, but I have to thank my coaches and teammates for helping me become the player I am today,” said the Virginia native.
The football team opened its season on Thursday night at Akron. It will return to action on Sept. 10 at Richmond. Kickoff against the Spiders is at 5:30 p.m.
