The bowling team competed in its first Northeast Conference Tournament of the semester on Feb. 5-6 in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, finishing seventh in an eight-team field. The team averaged 188.3 and knocked down a total of 6,590 pins.

The other NEC schools competing at the event included Duquesne, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Mount St. Mary’s, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis College and Wager.

It was a chance for the team to measure itself against other NEC schools in advance of the conference championship, which will be held March 25-27. The top five teams in the league qualify for the NEC Championship next month.

“The team has improved significantly each tournament. The ladies have gotten better, improving and working hard each step of the way,” said SFU head coach Ashley Bingham.

Prior to last weekend’s NEC tournament, the bowling team placed second at the Red Flash Invitational, Jan. 28-30, at the Holiday Bowl in Altoona. SFU finished runner-up to Morgan State in a field of 13 teams at that event with a team average of 181.

Sophomore Kassidy Landwehr earned all-tournament honors at the Red Flash Invitational. The South Carolina native placed in the top six individually at the tournament, averaging a 197.

“It was satisfying and it felt good to earn this and to see my hard work pay off,” said Landwehr.

The bowling team will return to action at the James Brown Invitational in Baltimore, Maryland, this weekend.
