The men’s and women’s track and field teams head to the Ocean Breeze Park and Athletic Complex on Staten Island this weekend to compete in the NEC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The men are ranked in the top five in nine different events, including the 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 300-meter run, 60-meter hurdles, the 4×800 relay, shot put, high jump, pole vault and triple jump.

Senior sprinter Christian McFadden is ranked first in the 60-meter dash, freshman Nickolas Hyde is ranked first in shot put, and sophomore Richard Gilchrist is first in the 60-meter hurdles.

“Winning an individual event at the championship has always been a goal of mine,” said McFadden.

On the women’s side, the Red Flash enter the championships ranked in the top five in four events. Junior Taylor Weaver is currently the favorite to win the pole vault – her vault of 12 feet, 11.5 inches ranks No. 1 in the conference.

“Everyone has had a great season,” said McFadden. “Everyone has grown, and we continue to grow as a team.”

Sophomore Barry Ndeh said assistant coach Chene Townsend has a saying that has stuck with the team this season: The difference between good and great is grit.

The men’s and women’s teams will be looking for that grit this weekend on Staten Island.
