The men’s soccer team defeated Stonehill, 2-0, in its Northeast Conference opener on Sept. 29 at the Stokes Soccerplex.
SFU head coach Mads Kaiser’s team extended its undefeated streak in NEC regular-season matches to 15. The last time that Saint Francis lost a regular-season NEC game was more than two years ago in a 1-0 loss to Sacred Heart on Oct. 2, 2022.
The Flash posted a 5-0-3 mark in the NEC regular season in 2023.
“Stonehill is a tough opponent, but a hard-earned clean sheet helped us keep the three points here in Loretto,” said Kaiser.
Sophomore Joschi Schelb from Germany scored a goal in each half to lead the way offensively. His first score came in the 29th minute off an assist from Alex De Nittis.
After Stonehill created a few good chances at the beginning of the second half, Schelb put the game out of reach in the 77th minute, finding the back of the SkyHawks’ net.
His final tally of the match was assisted by Patrick Kierzkowski.
The Red Flash outshot the Skyhawks, 10-6, in last Sunday’s game. Shot leaders were Schelb (three) and Fabian Wagner (two).
SFU sophomore goalkeeper Niclas Becker made four saves while playing all 90 minutes.
“It was an important win today because it always makes it easier to start the conference with a home win,” said Schelb.
“At the end of the day, it took every single one of us to win this game. And it will take every single one of us if we want to continue being successful.”
The Red Flash are back in action this Sunday, Oct. 6, when the team plays at LIU at 3 p.m. The Sharks are the defending NEC champions.
