The SFU football team could not overcome injuries and big plays that went the other way in a 36-0 loss at FBS-member Eastern Michigan last weekend.
Going into the game, the Flash knew it would be an uphill battle without the top two quarterbacks on the depth chart available against EMU.
Third-string QB Adrian Mejia – who has played primarily at wide receiver during his collegiate career – threw for 111 yards and ran for 20 more in the shutout loss.
A second FBS upset for the Flash felt within reach in the first half before disaster struck.
The Flash gave up a fumble just a yard outside of Eastern Michigan’s endzone with four-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first quarter and EMU junior David Carter returned the ball 99 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-0.
That would be the only Eastern Michigan touchdown in the half as an elite Saint Francis defense held the Eagles to a pair of field goals to trail 13-0 at the half.
Eastern Michigan’s offense would find the end zone early in the second half when running back Delbert Mimms scored on a one-yard run to make it 19-0.
The Eagles would add another touchdown in the third phase of the game on a blocked punt by Joey Mattord that was recovered by Kendrick Nowling in the end zone midway through the third quarter.
Another Eastern Michigan field goal and touchdown would be all she wrote for SFU.
One positive in the game for SFU was its stingy defense. The Flash defensive unit held EMU to a five-for-16 conversion rate on third down.
Redshirt sophomore defensive back Trey McLeer led the SFU defense with 11 tackles (six solo).
Saint Francis (1-3, 0-1 NEC) has a bye this weekend before playing at Delaware State on Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN-Plus.
