The men’s and women’s tennis teams both enjoyed their strongest seasons in recent years in 2023-24.
The men’s team closed the season with a 12-8 record and a 5-1 mark in the NEC. It is the first 10-win season for the team since 2017.
Key performers for the men’s team included Alan Gonzalez, who posted a 20-9 record in singles competition, and Tyler Nguyen, who finished with a 17-7 singles mark. The doubles duo of Nguyen and Mathis Tremblay also enjoyed great success, recording 13 doubles wins.
On the women’s side, the team reached the 10-win milestone for the second consecutive season, finishing with a 12-12 record and a 4-1 mark in the NEC.
Diana Zuba led the team with a 23-7 singles record. Kelly Dowuona posted 16 singles wins and led the team with 19 doubles victories.
In the quarterfinals of the NEC Championship earlier this month, the women’s team defeated Wagner, 4-0. Their strong showing was highlighted by a commanding performance in doubles play, with Sara Jankovic and Reagen Mangan clinching a 6-0 win at No. 2.
The team fell short in the semifinals against LIU, losing 4-3. Zuba highlighted the team’s play against the Sharks, posting a win at the top singles flight.
On the men’s side, the Flash advanced to the NEC finals, marking their first appearance in the championship match since 2017. In the finals against Binghamton, the team fought hard but lost, 4-1. Marc Fuste delivered a strong performance, securing a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 1 singles match.
In the semifinals, SFU faced FDU in a highly anticipated matchup. The Flash claimed victories in the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 singles matches to secure a hard-fought 4-2 win.
Gonzalez delivered a standout performance in the No. 3 singles match against FDU, earning a 6-1, 6-3 victory and notching his 20th singles win of the season.
Nguyen also delivered a strong performance in the NEC semis, battling through a tough three-set match in the No. 2 singles slot to secure the win.
