The field hockey team heads to Staten Island this weekend to compete in the NEC Tournament, which will be held at Wagner.
SFU is the No. 2 seed and has qualified for the postseason for a second consecutive year. Head coach Betta Ceretta’s team will face Sacred Heart on Friday at 2 p.m. in opening-round action.
The match will be streamed on NEC FrontRow.
The team enters the NEC Tournament with a 10-7 record after losing to Sacred Heart at home in its regular-season finale last weekend.
“We believe in our team and we cannot wait for the rematch (with Sacred Heart),” said Dolores Zavaleta, a junior midfielder from San Juan, Argentina.
“This time we are going to be ready.”
The Red Flash will be making their fifth NEC Tournament appearance after reaching 10 wins for the fifth time in team history.
Last weekend’s match against Sacred Heart was evenly played. SFU outshot the Pioneers, 11-10, and also had five shots on goal, to SHU’s four. SFU senior goalkeeper Amber Bryan (pictured left) played all 60 minutes in goal.
“Our team has a chance to compete with anybody and we are excited for the tournament,” said Zavaleta.
Junior Brooke Benson, who appeared in 16 matches in the regular season, including eight starts, said she is looking forward to the postseason.
“Our goal is to win an NEC championship and we will do our best to achieve that,” said the New Jersey native
