The men’s volleyball team posted back-to-back 3-0 victories against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on March 13 and 14 to open a four-match homestand.
“It felt really rewarding,” said freshman opposite Luke Colquette. “I like that we can still succeed with different styles of play while having great depth on the bench.”
In his second collegiate start, Colquette helped lead the team to victory against UMES in last Friday’s match. The first-year player from Colorado recorded a team-high 10 kills and three blocks in SFU’s victory.
Despite UMES being a first-year program, the Hawks have proven to be a solid team in the NEC with a current record of 12-7.
“I was impressed with the group of guys they have put together,” said SFU junior middle blocker Brayden Gall. “They are a very talented group of players.”
In the second match of last weekend against the Hawks, opposite Nathan Zinni posted a match-high 11 kills. The Flash delivered seven service aces in this match.
Following the sweep, SFU is now 9-8 and has won three of its first four NEC matches of the season.
“This weekend’s wins were very important for the team,” said Colquette.
SFU will host Daemen this Friday and Saturday in a pair of key NEC match-ups. Daemen defeated the Red Flash in last year’s NEC championship match, 3-1, in Loretto, to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Friday’s match against the Wildcats begins at 6 p.m. Saturday’s action will start at 3 p.m.
“I think that this year our conference is going to be scrappy from top to bottom,” said Gall. “We need to get a few more wins under our belt to prove we are one of the top teams in the NEC.”
