The men’s basketball team defeated New Haven, 73-67, on Feb. 24 in West Haven, Connecticut, to keep its hopes alive for an NEC playoff berth.
Senior Gestin Liberis scored a career-high 19 points and just missed a double-double, grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.
Liberis did not miss a shot on the evening, going 7-for-7 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He had key block in the first half and closed the game with a slam dunk to seal the victory.
Zion Russell added 14 points and four rebounds. Chris Moncrief chipped in 13 points and a steal for SFU. Skylar Wicks was also in double figures for the Flash with 13 points.
As a team, SFU did not miss a free throw attempt on the evening, going 17-for-17. The Chargers shot 56 percent (9-for-16) from the stripe.
SFU shot 57 percent from the floor (26-for-46), compared to the Chargers’ 45 percent (24-for-53). The Flash outrebounded New Haven, 33-20.
Jabri Fitzpatrick led New Haven (13-16, 8-8 NEC) with 22 points.
The victory ended an eight-game losing streak for SFU (7-22, 5-11 NEC) and pulled the Flash into a tie with Chicago State for the final NEC playoff spot with two games to go.
SFU’s next game is at Stonehill on Feb. 26. The game tips at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on NEC FrontRow.
